Nextel customers get rude awakening
Associated Press

Cell phone users in the Bakersfield area were awakened early this morning to an urgent text message.

Nextel customers woke up to a message urging them to support striking grocery workers in Southern California.

Apparently someone hacked the wireless communications' system and sent similar messages to Nextel's customers, including some highway patrol members.

The sender of the message is unknown.

United Food and Commercial Workers Union denies responsibility.

A spokeswoman for Nextel says she does not know how it happened, and says Nextel is not taking a position on the strike.
