CFVC Convention: Day One

Hostess Linda Faith had everything in hand. Chris Schaper, who had landed from California, and who had been with me in Dubuque, Iowa when we caught the vote fraud by VNS against Buchanan in 1996, and Nick Landholt of Kansas had filled in for everything else while Linda was greeting the convention delegates.

Almost the first person I saw when I entered the hotel was Donato Dalrymple, the “fisherman” who had saved Elian on the ocean. I hardly had time to express my hearfelt gratitude that he came -- because it was “showtime” and the conference had to begin.

We had a full room, and after Devvy Kidd led us in the pledge of allegiance, I tiraded on for about an hour. We were filming, so a lot of the group had surely heard some or much of it before, but everyone was jovial and played along, laughing and clapping in the appropriate places.

Then we had Friday Night at the Movies.

n The Dan Rather Report of 1988.

n Ted Koppel admitting on Nightline in 1996 that all the TV networks got their exit polls from the same source, Voter News Service.

n The Channel 12 local news report by Nick Clooney (George Clooney’s Dad, Rosemary Clooney’s brother) and Mary Krutko about the wiretappers, one of whom swore under oath he had wiretapped an election.

n Our campaign commercials about votefraud aired in the late 80’s.

n Sen. Bob Smith talking about how all the TV networks called him the loser in 1996 in the New Hampshire Senate race --- only to be proven wrong when the hand counted ballots came in. “They forgot that in New Hampshire we count the votes before we declare the winner,” Smith told the C-Span interviewer with a smile.

n And the Colliers in Cincinnati in 1985 trying to film under the court order we had received. This is a riveting tape in which the Judge is forced to reverse himself under duress from both party leaderships, and modify his own ruling on the spot, claiming absurdly that his order authorizing us to “observe all phases of the election process” and bring his court back a report – did NOT include videotaping.

The films, I think all would agree, were fascinating and have a great impact. There were many more. Maybe for another convention. But we had to stop sometime, and we stopped about 11 PM.

Tomorrow would be a big day, and film would be rolling all the time. A few hundred feet away, in an upper conference room, talk show host Christine Ross would interview the speakers, one by one, so they could put “on the record” anything that was not included in their speech.

All these films are being analyzed for the first edit. We will do a more in depth edit in a while or after the election. There’s so much to do that must be done NOW between now and November 7th. The Spotlight Staff is making an initial edit for a highlights tape, and that will be available through the Spotlight probably in the next issue
